LIFE PROCESS
CONCEPTUAL RATIONALE
THE WORKS ARE PAINTED. EACH ONE IS MADE BY SUBMERGING STICKS AND OBJECTS IN PAINT AND RELEASING IT ONTO THE CANVAS LAID ON THE FLOOR. THROWING, DRIPPING, LETTING IT FALL. GRAVITY, TRAJECTORY, AND THE ARC OF THE GESTURE DETERMINE WHAT FORMS. THE IMAGE EMERGES FROM CONDITIONS THAT CANNOT BE FULLY CONTROLLED OR ANTICIPATED.
THIS IS A SERIES IN PROGRESS. EACH PAINTING EXTENDS THE INQUIRY RATHER THAN RESOLVING IT.
THE WORKS MOVE ACROSS LIVING FORMS THROUGH THE SAME PROCESS, UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS. WHAT HOLDS THEM TOGETHER IS NOT A THEME BUT A RECOGNITION: THAT WHAT ANIMATES LIFE OPERATES ACCORDING TO A LOGIC THAT EXCEEDS WHAT CAN BE FULLY SEEN OR UNDERSTOOD. THE WORKS DO NOT EXPLAIN THIS. THEY ATTEMPT TO STAY CLOSE TO IT.
THE WORKS BEGIN WHERE HABITUAL PERCEPTION LOOSENS. WHAT THEY EXPLORE IS NOT A CONCEPT BUT A CONDITION: THE EXPERIENCE OF PRESENCE BEFORE IT IS ORGANIZED INTO THOUGHT, MEMORY, OR IDENTITY. THE FIGURE APPEARS BUT DOES NOT HOLD. RECOGNITION OCCURS BUT DOES NOT SETTLE. SOMETHING IS THERE, AND THEN IT ISN'T.

THIS WORK ARISES FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF SIMULTANEITY: THE CONDITION IN WHICH EMOTIONS, MEMORIES, AND UNCONSCIOUS PROCESSES EMERGE NOT IN SEQUENCE BUT ALL AT ONCE, AS A CONTINUOUS FIELD WITHOUT HIERARCHY.
THE PROCESS REFLECTS THIS CONDITION. PAINT IS RELEASED WITHOUT BRUSHES, FOLLOWING THE INHERENT MOVEMENT OF MATTER. MATERIAL AND CHANCE DEVELOP THEIR OWN LOGIC. NOTHING ORGANIZES THE EXPERIENCE FROM OUTSIDE.
PERCEPTION DOES NOT SELECT. IT EXISTS WITHIN WHAT IT RECEIVES. WHAT THE WORK TRACES CANNOT BE SEPARATED INTO PARTS WITHOUT ALTERING ITS NATURE. IT ONLY EXISTS WHOLE.

TWO FACES EMERGE FROM THE SAME FIELD. THEY FACE EACH OTHER AT A DISTANCE THAT IS DIFFICULT TO MEASURE: CLOSE ENOUGH TO RECOGNIZE, FAR ENOUGH TO REMAIN SEPARATE
THE MATERIAL THAT FORMS THEM IS THE SAME. WHAT DIVIDES THEM IS LESS CERTAIN. WHAT ONE PERCEIVES IN THE OTHER CANNOT BE FULLY SEPARATED FROM WHAT IT ALREADY CARRIES WITHIN ITSELF. PERCEPTION, FILTERED THROUGH A FIXED SENSE OF SELF, DOES NOT ARRIVE CLEAN. IT ARRIVES ALREADY COMPROMISED.
THE POINT AT WHICH THE OTHER ENDS AND THE SELF BEGINS DOES NOT RESOLVE.

IS NOT WHAT SURROUNDS THE FIGURE. IT IS WHAT THE SURROUNDING FIGURES CARRY WITHIN THEM.
EACH ONE HOLDS A SELF SO FIXED IT CANNOT OPEN TOWARD WHAT EXCEEDS IT. THE LARGER FIGURE DOES NOT IMPOSE ITS SCALE. IT SIMPLY REMAINS WITHIN SOMETHING THE OTHERS HAVE MOVED AWAY FROM.
WHAT SEPARATES THEM IS NOT SPACE. IT IS THE SELF.

THIS WORK ARISES FROM AN EXPERIENCE OF IDENTITY COLLAPSE: THE MOMENT IN WHICH THE CONCEPTS AND NARRATIVES THAT CONSTRUCT THE SELF CEASE TO PROVIDE A STABLE ANSWER TO WHAT I AM.
THE FACE REMAINS RECOGNIZABLE, YET UNSTABLE, IN A CONTINUOUS STATE OF APPEARANCE AND DISAPPEARANCE. THE DARK, ALMOST LIFELESS GAZE INTENSIFIES THIS SENSE OF SUSPENSION BETWEEN PRESENCE AND DISSOLUTION.
WHAT THE WORK PROPOSES IS NOT THE LOSS OF SELF AS CRISIS, BUT AS AN OPENING TOWARD SOMETHING THAT IDENTITY ALONE CANNOT CONTAIN.
